Barbershop harmony returns April 1 in Colby

The Tumbleweed Chorus presents its 41st annual show “It’s A Grand Night for Singing” at 2 p.m. central, Saturday, April 1 at the Cultural Arts Center at Colby Community College.
The Tumbleweed Chorus will again sing jointly with the Hays High Plains Barbershop Chorus. Max Befort is director of the Hays chorus and will direct most of the jointly performed songs. The Tumbleweed Chorus and the Prairie Rose Harmony women’s chorus will be led by director Thomas Annis. Northwest Kansas men’s quartets Uncalled Four and Prairie Timbre will also entertain. After their northwest Kansas debut at last year’s show, Kansas State University’s In-A-Chord returns. The contemporary a capella group will showcase much of the second half. Among the student members is Eric Annis, collage sophomore son of Thomas and Suzy Annis, Oakley, who started singing with the Tumbleweed Chorus in late 2011 as a third grader.
In-A-Chord performs a wide variety of pop and contemporary music throughout Kansas and surrounding states. In-A-Chord is overseen by Dr. Joshua Oppenheim, Co-Director of Choral Studies. In-A-Chord will present a sampling on their songs April 1 and then return to northwest Kansas on Sunday, April 23 at 3 p.m. for an entire show for Western Plains Arts Association at the Oakley High School Auditorium.

Colby travels to Hays in April for Hays High Plains Chorus shows The Tumbleweed Chorus will then join the Hays High Plains Barbershop Chorus for its 55th Anniversary Show Saturday, April 15 at the Beach-Schmidt Performing Arts Center, Sheridan Hall, Fort Hays State University Campus. Vocal Spectrum, 2006 international quartet champions, will be the finale quartet for both the 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. CDT shows. The quartet has been singing together since 2003. Members come from various musical backgrounds, from classical vocal training to jammin' in rock-n-roll bands. These four men, who graduated from Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo., all majored in different fields of study. Vocal Spectrum has traveled internationally and throughout the United States singing for shows and conventions as well as teaching high school students about barbershop harmony.
